Chambers, George F., The Story of Eclipses, D. Appleton & Co., New York (1912). This handy little volume offers much detail on historical references to solar and lunar eclipses. (Out of Print )
Dyson, Frank, and Woolley, R. v. d. R., Eclipses of the Sun and Moon, Oxford Univ. Press, London (1937). This textbook on eclipses has an emphasis on the mathematics and physics of eclipses.
Pasachoff, Jay M., A Field Guide to the Stars and Planets (Peterson Field Guide Series) Volume 15; 3rd Edition., Houghton Mifflin, Boston (1992). This guide includes all kinds of information (plus maps) to help you find objects in the sky, including eclipses.
Mitchell, Samuel A., Eclipses of the Sun, Columbia Univ. Press, New York (fifth edition, 1951). This basic text on solar eclipses blends the author's personal experiences with the history and science of eclipses.
Todd, Mabel L., Total Eclipses of the Sun, Little, Brown, & Co., Boston (1900). This popular treatment of the subject was produced in anticipation of the May 28, 1900, eclipse in the United States. (Out of print.)
National Geographic has included a number of articles on solar eclipses. See the issues of August 1970, November 1963, March 1949, September 1947, September 1937, February 1937, and November 1932.
Two monthly magazines, Sky and Telescope and Astronomy, provide much useful information. Hardly a month passes without some treatment of eclipses and related subjects.
ECLIPSE DATA
The Astronomical Almanac, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C. 20402. This annual volume contains (among much other information) the details of all eclipses for the year.
Espenak, Fred, Fifty Year Canon of Solar Eclipses: 1986-2035, NASA Reference Publication 1178 (1987). This reference is unsurpassed for accurate and detailed information concerning upcoming solar eclipses.
Kudlek, Manfred, and Mickler, Erich H., Solar and Lunar Eclipses of the Ancient Near East, Verlag Butzon & Bercker Kevelaer, Hamburg (1971). This book gives eclipse data and maps from 3000 B. C. to the year 0 for important historical places in the ancient Near East.
Meeus, J., Grosjean, C. C., and Vanderleen, W., Canon of Solar Eclipses, Pergamon Press, Oxford (1966). This canon contains the worldwide data and maps of all solar eclipses between 1898 and 2510.
Oppolzer, Theodor R. von, Canon of Eclipses, Dover Publications, New York (1962). This is a reprint of Oppolzer's classic of 1887; it presents data and maps for eclipses from 1207 B. C. to 2161 A. D.
SOLAR ECLIPSE PHOTOGRAPHY
Paul, Henry, Outer Space Photography, American Photographic Book Publishing Company (1960). It includes a chapter on eclipse photography.
Astrophotography Basics, Kodak Customer Service Pamphlet Number AC-48 (1978). This concise and informative guide has much good information on eclipse photography.
ANCIENT ASTRONOMY
Aveni, Anthony F., Skywatchers of Ancient Mexico, University of Texas Press, Austin (1980). This text includes a lengthy discussion of eclipse tables found in the Dresden Codex of the ancient Maya.
Hawkins, Gerald S., Stonehenge Decoded, Doubleday, Garden City (1965). This is the original account of the discovery that Stonehenge may have been used to predict eclipses.
Hoyle, Fred, On Stonehenge, W. H. Freeman & Co., San Francisco (1977). This book delves deeper into the astronomical aspects of this ancient monument.
OTHER
Lineman, Rose, Eclipses: Astrological Guideposts, American Federation of Astrologers, Inc., Tempe, Arizona (1984). This book includes eclipse interpretations for those who are astrologically inclined.
Schatz, Dennis, Astronomy Activity Book, Simon and Schuster, New York (1991). This book provides numerous astronomy activities geared for school-age children.
Sonneborn, Ruth A., Someone is Eating the Sun, illustrated by Eric Gurney, Random House, New York (1974). This delightful 32-page children's book tells the story of how animal characters react to a total solar eclipse.
