"11 July 1991 -- Maximum Eclipse" Limited Edition Lithograph

This finely detailed print depicts the position of the Moon's shadow at the point of maximum eclipse during the total solar eclipse of July 11, 1991. The dark central shadow (the umbra) reached a width of about 160 miles near Tepic, Mexico, where at six minutes past noon, local time, totality lasted for 6 minutes and 53 seconds. No place on Earth will experience a longer duration of totality until the eclipse of June 13, 2132. The lighter, partial shadow (the penumbra) covers areas where the Sun was seen in partial eclipse in much of the Western Hemisphere.

(NOTE: The reproduction to the left is an electronic version of the print optimized for viewing online. The print itself is very beautiful and suitable for framing, with fine details and smooth color gradients in blue and black.)

The orthographic projection of the Earth as seen from space also depicts the complete path of totality for this historic event. The path darkens the entire island of Hawaii, the lower Baja Peninsula, and major parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America. Included in the path are five capital cities: Mexico City, Guatemala City, San Salvador, Managua, and San Jose.

The print is a limited edition of 400 copies and measures 14 inches by 17 inches. Lithographed on high-quality, acid-free paper with black and deep blue inks, each print has been personally inspected and signed by Patrick Jankanish. A hybrid of art and science, this striking image of a rare and beautiful event serves as a unique commemorative of what for many is a truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Patrick Jankanish has worked as a professional cartographer and graphic designer for 20 years, producing a wide variety of maps. Many of his designs have garnered awards from the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. Mr. Jankanish also provided the graphic design and maps for the second edition of ECLIPSE, by Bryan Brewer.

Signed and numbered copies of this unique work of art are shipped rolled in sturdy mailing tube.
