About ECLIPSE Author Bryan Brewer

Bryan Brewer wrote the first edition of ECLIPSE in anticipation of the February 26, 1979, total solar eclipse that passed near his home in Seattle, Washington. As he says: "It was a classic case of 'I couldn't find a good book on the subject, so I wrote one'." No stranger to cosmic coincidences, Brewer cites two inspirations for his celestial inclinations: his older son, Devin, celebrated his second birthday on the February 26th eclipse in 1979, and turned 21 on eclipse day in the Caribbean in 1998; and his younger son, Matt, celebrated his fifth birthday on April 11, 1986, the day Halley's Comet made its closest approach to Earth.

Brewer's broad interests in science, mathematics, geography, history, and psychology give him the background to write and speak engagingly about all aspects of eclipses. In 1979 he made numerous media appearances to help popularize this event, and he and his family and friends enjoyed a spectacular first view of totality near Goldendale, Washington. In 1991, he published the second edition of ECLIPSE and worked with the Bishop Museum in Honolulu and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii in connection with the July 11, 1991, total solar eclipse. (Unfortunately, they were clouded out during totality.) Brewer also led a group of eclipse chasers to Iguacu Falls, Brazil, where they enjoyed a magnificent view of the solar corona on Nov. 3, 1994. He organized a group of travelers with whom he experienced totality aboard the Celebrity Cruises GALAXY on the 1998 Eclipse Caribbean Cruise with his wife and two sons, on Feb. 26, 1998.

In other pursuits, Brewer co-authored (with Edd Key) The Compact Disc Book and is also the producer of the audio compact disc The Fine Art of Relaxation by Joel Levey. Currently he provides Web project consulting services through Earth View Inc., Seattle, WA.

The Brewers' log house near Mt. Rainier (mentioned in this the first edition of ECLIPSE in 1978) has been completed, and after living there for a six-year period, the Brewers now enjoy the home as a beautiful retreat (Big Creek Lodge) where they host meetings and seminars in a secluded natural environment.

ECLIPSE DANCE

The Sun and the Moon are dancing, circles in the sky,
The shadow is advancing, the dragon passes by.
And in the darkest moment, in the soul's dark night,
Great Mystery reveals itself, and the darkness turns to light.
